My Open Letter to the St. Louis Blues on the Eve of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals...

Dear the young men who currently wear the St. Louis Blues uniform,

There are only 30 of you. According to Wikipedia, there are approximately 3 million of us in the bi-state area. That's a lot of happiness for the 30 of you to carry on your shoulders.

When was the last time 3 million people came together with this kind of energy to agree on anything in this city? I saw a man on a bridge Sunday waving a Blues flag at traffic driving toward downtown on 44.

I haven't seen that kind of energy and pride since 9/11.

Everyone loves a good underdog story. Hollywood is full of them.

In 2004, Boston came to town and broke the 86 year Curse of the Bambino on our turf. Literally. Our city residents grew and tended to that grass. Boston also brought Hollywood with them to film it live because our loss ruined the end of the already filmed movie Fever Pitch and there was no way the energy could be recreated.

Tomorrow you will take the ice in someone else's house. It doesn't matter. You will hear a thunder that isn't for you. It doesn't matter. You were counted out long ago. It doesn't matter.

For 60 minutes of play, you are 1 goalie, 5 skaters, 24 brothers on the bench and a coaching staff with a common goal. You will play as if you are one, because you are one. One Team. One Mission. One Cup.

You have already achieved the impossible. You have united this city under the colors of blue and yellow. All genders, all ages, all races. Rich. Not rich. Die hard hockey fans. Bandwagon hockey fans. We are all in agreement. We all have one thing in common that is connecting us.

It's time. We believe. You are not carrying us on your shoulders. We are the ice beneath your skates. We are the power that pushes you toward the puck. We are the cup being hoisted above your heads.

Don't worry about us. Focus only on what you are there to do.

All good underdog stories have a good motivational, ass kicking speech. Hollywood is full of those too.

I know that Berube will take care of this, but if he were being played by James Van der Beek he would probably say something like this:

"Before this game started, NBC Sportscasters said, '60 minutes for the next 60 years of our lives.' I say fuck that. I say, fuck that. Let's go out there and we'll play the next 3 periods for the next 3 periods, and we'll leave it all out on the ice. We have the rest of our lives to be mediocre, but we have the opportunity to play like gods for the next 3 periods of hockey! But we can't be afraid to lose! There's no room for fear in this game. If we go out there, and we half-ass it because we're scared, then all we're left with is an excuse. We're always gonna wonder. But if we go out there and we give it absolutely everything . . . that's heroic. Let's be heroes."

This may be called Cardinal's Nation, but we also bleed blue. We all bleed blue. It runs deep in our veins and our souls.

Boston took the Commissioner's Trophy on our turf 15 years ago.

There have been 15 wins that have brought us to this moment.

Let's hoist the Cup over our heads on Boston ice. It's our turn.

Thanks for the Magic,

A Blues Fan...

  11. I read this several days ago, but wanted to come back to tell you how right you are. My parents dealt with a lot of heartache through the years as many of the original fans did. I just wanted them to see a Cup win, as they were getting near 70's and had been to the games in those first few seasons. It was a bucket list scratch-off they were hopeful for when retirement set in. Unfortunately, I started having a lot of chronic, life threatening medical issues the last couple years and started wondering if it was something I would ever see as well. It really is something special for us to get to see this after all these years, before my dad was drafted for 'Nam. When I got to have my baby girl wear the Note. When we all saw the worst to the first! LGB!
